Welcome to our monthly update on the National Underground Asset Register (NUAR), an interactive digital map of underground pipes and cables from the Geospatial Commission. It gives planners and excavators standardised access to the data they need, when they need it, to carry out their work effectively and safely. You can find out more on GOV.UK.
NUAR was launched in Northern Ireland
NUAR was launched in Northern Ireland earlier this year. It includes data from gas, electric, water and telecommunications companies.
This is a big step towards the platform being fully operational by the end of 2025, as the minimum viable product is now live across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
This announcement was delayed due to the pre-election period when there are restrictions on government communications activities.
Join our webinars on NUAR legislation
The Digital Information and Smart Data Bill will harness the power of data for economic growth and put NUAR on a statutory footing.
We are running two webinars to explain the measures contained within the bill, providing an overview of the legislative process, outlining the measures being sought surrounding NUAR and sharing our plans to engage asset owners and other stakeholders.

Publishing the NUAR Data Model
The Geospatial Commission have now published the data model that underpins NUAR and enables us to present underground asset data from hundreds of different organisations, in a clear and consistent way.
By publishing the model as an industry resource, we hope to support asset owner data sharing, promote data maturity, enable collaborative enhancements and progress the international adoption of a single standard for subsurface data.
